"He is a midget he'll never make it" Words said by sir alex when he first saw paul scholes play for utd's youth team and 22 years on paul scholes retires as one of the most respected n successful footballer of all time. A part of a rare breed who shunned the lime light and just lived n breathe football.A man of few words but a player of the highest ability. It all started back in 91 when a young scholes was spotted by brian kidd n was asked to come train with utd, slowly n steadily scholes made progressed through the ranks after making his debut against port vale n scoring a brace in that match scholes was used in different roles filling in for the banned eric cantona n then in midfield filling in for injured roy keane with whom he later formed a lethal partnership in the heart of utd's midfield,as the tears passed he grew in stature n was putting in flawless performances after flawless performances. The technical ability he possessed was more or less unknown to english footballers. He went up against the best n made them look like amateurs "cant catch him on the field cant see him off it" said luis figo Paul scholes is an institution in himself, a perfect role model for kids out there not just for those aspiring to be great footballers but for those who want to be better men. As a player when he always had the spectacular in him, from his 50 yards passes to 30 yards thunderbolts he had everything a midfielder could dream off scoring touch, vision, tackling yes he was a good tackler (his tackling rate over the years show that) and flair but he was never the one to show it all off as he once said about his goal against barcelona "it was a fluke i shinned it"
His longevity shows that he led a perfect life off the pitch as he is a well known asthmatic n he wasnt blessed with an athletic body like giggs either but he looked after himself n made himself fit enough to get into the midfield of the best team in england week in week out deep into his 30s so was his influence that sir alex had to call him back just 6 months into his initial retirement n boy did he show what utd missed in those 6 months.
To round it all off paul scholes is not just a legend but he is someone who is irreplaceable many came who were deemed as his replacement but failed n utd had to turn to the man himself again to be their general A perfect entertainer on the pitch gave utd fans many moments to remember and as the curtain closed on his career we might not see him on the pitch but he'll always be in our hearts loved n adored. Thank you for the brilliant memories Paul Scholes.
